Beta

A little room
for whatever’s next.

Bring a quiet note above your work. Jot down a thought, work out a number, or keep a snippet within reach. Open an original text or code file when you need to work on the file itself.

A thought. A calculation. A reference.

Catch the thought.
Keep your place.

Summon a floating note while the idea is still fresh. Pin it nearby, then carry on with what you were doing.

Search and switch between notes whenever you need a little more room.

Work it out.
Right where you are.

Let the numbers share the page. Calculations handles arithmetic, variables, percentages and unit conversions.

Keep each step in view, so the answer still has its context.

A reference.
Within reach.

Keep a snippet beside your work. Each note has its own Text, Calculations, Code or Markdown mode.

When it is time to concentrate, the optional focus backdrop softens the rest of your screen. Expand the writing area separately.

Your file.
Still your file.

Open a text, Markdown, code or .env file in its own lightweight window.

Open File, Finder Open With and file drops open the original. Review Markdown in Edit or Preview, use code highlighting, and save deliberately with Command-S. Save As keeps a separate file; Reload from Disk lets you return to the saved version.

Original files use manual Save and ask you to review unsaved changes when closing. Library notes keep autosaving as before. Create Copy as Note is an explicit action: opening a file never silently imports it into your notes.

A discreet Saved confirmation appears after a successful save. If another app changes the file on disk, Notes asks you to resolve the change before overwriting it.

Take the source
with you.

Export the text you wrote, with the filename you choose.

Use Export Note to save plain source as Text, Markdown or a code format. Custom (any extension) accepts .env, .env.local, another extension or an extensionless filename. Calculation results and rendered Markdown are not added to the exported source.

Code and configuration stay text: Notes never executes them. Be discreet with secrets in .env files, exports and anything you copy or share.

Before you begin.

What you’ll need
Apple Silicon · macOS 15.0 or later. Notes uses local text files and does not need an AI model or an external service.
Current boundaries
No cloud sync or currency conversion. Code highlighting does not execute code. Markdown preview is deliberately limited: no active links, remote images or full GitHub-flavored Markdown support. Original files must be supported text up to 2 MiB; binary files and unsupported encodings cannot be edited. Notes is in beta; keep backups of important notes and original files.
Privacy & connections
Notes and calculations work locally, without model inference or a network service. Notes are stored as readable text files on your Mac. Keep your own backups of important work.
